چکیده

Linear response methods are applied to identify the increase in electron-phonon coupling in elemental yttrium that is responsible for its high superconducting critical temperature Tc, which reaches nearly 20 K at 115 GPa. While the evolution of the band structure and density of states is smooth and seemingly modest, there is strong increase in the 4d content of the occupied conduction states under pressure. We find that the transverse mode near the L point of the fcc Brillouin zone, already soft at ambient pressure, becomes unstable (in harmonic approximation) at a relative volume V/Vo = 0.60 (P ≈ 42 GPa). The coupling to transverse branches is relatively strong at all high symmetry zone boundary points X, K, and L. Coupling to the longitudinal branches is not as strong, but extends over more regions of the Brillouin zone and involves higher frequencies. Evaluation of the electron-phonon spectral function αF (ω) shows a very strong increase with pressure of coupling in the 2-7 meV range, with a steady increase also in the 7-20 meV range. These results demonstrates strong electron-phonon coupling in this system that can account for the observed range of Tc.

Electron-phonon coupling in iron-doped yttrium aluminum garnet

The electron-phonon coupling in iron-doped yttrium aluminum garnet crystals is studied in the theoretical framework of linear and quadratic coupling. The line shift and line broadening of the zero phonon line of iron centers as a function of temperature between 10 and 150 K is qualitatively and quantitatively explained. The spectroscopic features of the line, deduced from the theory of lattice ...

Origin of Strong Coupling in Lithium under Pressure

In an attempt to provide a clearer understanding of the impressive increase in Tc under pressure in elemental Li, linear response calculation of the phonon dispersion curves, electron-phonon matrix elements, phonon linewidths and mode λ’s have been carried out on a finer mesh (24 in the Brillouin zone) than done previously, for the volume corresponding to 20 GPa pressure. The result illustrates...

Superconductivity at 20 K in Yttrium Metal at Pressures Exceeding 1 Mbar

In experiments in a diamond anvil cell, yttrium metal is found to display a superconducting transition temperature in the ac susceptibility which increases monotonically from 3.5 K at 30 GPa to 19.5 K at 115 GPa, where the transition onset lies at 20 K. This is the second highest value of Tc ever observed for an elemental superconductor. A …t to the Y data using the McMillan equation is consist...

Dispersion of incoherent spectral features in systems with strong electron-phonon coupling

We study (inverse) photoemission from systems with strong coupling of doped carriers to phonons. Using an adiabatic approximation, we develop a method for calculating spectra. This method is particularly simple for systems where the electron-phonon coupling can be neglected in the initial state, e.g., the undoped t-J model. The theory then naturally explains why the electron-phonon coupling jus...

Competing phases, strong electron-phonon interaction, and superconductivity in elemental calcium under high pressure

The observed “simple cubic” sc phase of elemental Ca at room temperature in the 32–109 GPa range is, from linear-response calculations, dynamically unstable. By comparing first-principles calculations of the enthalpy for five sc-related nonclose-packed structures, we find that all five structures compete energetically at room temperature in the 40–90 GPa range, and three do so in the 100–130 GP...
